CNA Assists Soldier Trapped in a Burning Vehicle - Kassandra Ooms - CNA Heroes on CNA-TV

On her way home from a long shift in the Emergency Medicine Department at Madigan Army Medical Center in Washington State, Kassandra Ooms, a certified nursing assistant, stopped along the side of the road to assist a soldier trapped in a burning vehicle. The car was fully engulfed in flames. A passing soldier and dispatcher were able to pull the man from the burning car. By this time, a pediatric resident stopped to help. Kassandra and the resident started cutting the soldier’s clothing off to find injuries needing immediate attention. He was breathing and had a good pulse, but the heat from the car fire was feeling intense, so they moved the soldier and waited for the ambulance to arrive. With no witness to the initial circumstance that started the fire, Madigan's Good Samaritan responders all expected that the fire may have started after the car hit a tree. Kassandra was grateful that the others stopped to help too. "The kindness that these people showed just by even stopping and helping was just really refreshing. It was good; it was really nice," she said. Given the intensity of the fire and that those removing the driver did not have a second to spare, Kassandra concluded, "It was nothing shy of a miracle that he was OK."
