1st visit to Cheddington on the West Coast Main Line well 2 times in one day with the 1st half of the video filmed in the morning whilst the 2nd half was in the early evening. Featuring Avanti West Coast, London Northwestern Railway and some freight as well. Cheddington first opened in 1838 as Aylesbury Junction when it use to connect with the London & North Western Railway Branch to Aylesbury High Street It was renamed in 1850 as Cheddington Junction before being renamed to Cheddington in 1870 The Aylesbury High Street closed to Passengers in 1953 before closing for good in 1964 with the former trackbed to the former branch line now occupied by a station car park. Today the station is served by London Northwestern Railway Half Hourly services to and from Milton Keynes Central One of the most notable things that the station is known is it's near the site of the famous 'The Great Train Robbery' being 1.2 miles away between here and Leighton Buzzard at Bridego Bridge, Ledburn near Mentmore. Just after 3am on August 8th 1963 when a Royal Mail train was stopped by 16 men led by Bruce Reynolds including members such as Ronnie Biggs which first began with tampering of the signals and then followed by an attack on the train itself. The driver Jack Mills and Secondman David Whitby were seriously injured during the assault. Mills suffered head injuries after being struck several times with a crowbar and whilst survived however due to the extent of the injures he was unable to work on the railways again however sadly died a few years later in 1970. David Whitby who was Age 26 at the time of the assault also suffered injuries and trauma from the ordeal and although was eventually able to resume his job as secondman in 1968 unfortunately would pass away at just the age of 34 from a heart attack in January 1972. The amount that was stolen during The Great Train Robbery was estimated to be over £2.6 million pounds which was equivalent to around £55 million in todays money making the most expensive robbery ever to be carried out. Of the 16 men involved 11 were given sentences averaging over 25 - 30 years However despite no firearms were used unfortunately most of the stolen money was never recovered. The Great Train Robbery also had a major impact in UK Politics as well which would play a factor in the resignation of the Prime Minister at the time Harold MacMillan His reasons for the resignation however were highly controversial because it was claimed he resigned for medical related reasons however that was later deemed to be incorrect and whatever the actual reason he would never contest his seat in the General Election the following year which was won by Harold Wilson Today and rather surprisingly one of the Royal Mail carriages of the train that was involved is now today preserved at the Nene Valley Railway near Peterborough however as for the one carriage (M30204M) that was the focal point of the events was kept for police investigation for another 7 years however was burnt in a scrapyard in Norwich in 1970. The final lasting legacy of that night is a plate installed by Network Rail on Bridego Bridge as a reminder of the infamous 'The Great Train Robbery' Featuring 1st half of the video Alex's Trains Music used: JJD - Adventure Music provided by NCS Video link: NoCopyrightSounds • JJD - Adventure | Glitch Hop | NCS - Copyr...
