Harvie & Hudson: The Power of Bespoke Tailoring - Simply Handsome 247 Welcome to Simply Handsome 247 the Youtube channel dedicated to fashion, style and creativity for men. In today’s episode, we will be talking to Mr. Richard Harvie; Managing Director of Harvie Hudson, a third generation shirt maker/ tailors of the world famous Jermyn Street, London, about the power of bespoke tailoring. Simply Handsome 247: Why is bespoke tailoring the best option? Harvey & Hudson: Nothing can bet something that is well cut and well made. You’d look at a guy and think he looks brilliantly handsome, he might be only wearing a blazer, but it’s cut really well and the silhouette is fantastic. The quality shows whatever else happens; you can get a mass produced anything and quit often they are well put together but it’s down to the cut. Why is bespoke tailoring important for our heritage? Harvey & Hudson: Bespoke is the cornerstone of Harvie and Hudson and it should be the cornerstone of any of the outlets on Jermyn Street, but it isn’t. There are very few people that do bespoke, because it isn’t an area that is easy to manage and it has to have an awful lot of background, training and it’s just not something you can just replicate in your store. Bespoke tailoring is fabulous because you can literally have anything you want. You can have something in a classical cut or something outrageous , that wouldn’t be worth mass producing but you’d have it made. If it’s made for you— you can never replicate that, anything off the shelf might fit you like a glove but that would be lucky, you would have to compromise in some way, atleast with bespoke you wouldn’t have to compromise. Simply Handsome 247: What is your definition of bespoke? Harvey & Hudson: Bespoke is completely from the ground up. There are two areas of made to measure, there is a made to measure, which is the basic; that is based on stock patterns- the one that fits you best, and then you would have the sleeves done the correct way and collar done to the correct size, down to an 8th of an inch. Fully bespoke is a totally different thing, your measured by a well trained cutter that would make a pattern for you out of paper, he will cut around that pattern and make a sample, you’d try the sample and say what your comments are- you might like it you might find some problems, but generally it will start up pretty close to right. Then we’ll get that to a point that is prefect for you, if your happy with it, we complete an order. That is fully bespoke, that is a rare thing. Simply Handsome 247: What is lacking in men’s fashion? Harvey & Hudson: Attention to detail is probably what gets left behind, because it takes time; therefore cost a lot of money and a lot of those skills disappear as we go along. Quit often you’d have to pay a lot of money for it, people perhaps don’t want to pay that; things like handmade button holes are a very rare thing now and are beautiful, but would people pay £25 for each one? It’s unlikely. Things like real mother of peal or bone buttons are pretty rare as well, because they cost a lot of money, but they feel fantastic and buttons are a garment that makes all the difference.
