Our locomotive 6412 is an auto-fitted pannier tank designed by Collett and built in 1932. It has had the honours of working the last day of Chalford-Gloucester services, and the first running days of both the South Devon and West Somerset Railways, as well as starring in a 1977 TV programme " Flockton Flyer". It had no problem handling our 5 coach train on the level track following the River Dart from Buckfastleigh to Totnes, where there is a connection to the Exeter-Plymouth main line, with a single stop at Staverton, the passing loop on busy days. She would have been less happy if she had ventured onto the main line with a choice of climbing either Dainton or Rattery! As the loco runs round at Totnes you can contrast our level track with the foot of Dainton West, now levelling out from its fierce 1:37. This scenic line must be one of the prettiest of the heritage lines. It was originally a 6 1/2 mile broad-gauge line running a further 2 1/2 miles to Ashburton, opened in 1872. At the end I give views from both sides of the return to Buckfastleigh. If necessary, adjust to 1080 HD.
