This video shows adjusting the clutch on a Ford 1700 tractor. Unlike modern vehicles with hydraulic sled adjusting clutches, the Ford 1700 tractor clutch has a fully mechanical linkage that must be adjusted as the clutch wears. Free travel of the clutch pedal is the travel before resistance increases and it gets harder to push as the clutch disengaged. On this machine, the free travel of the pedal is supposed to be between 3/4” and 1-3/16” and checked every 50 hours of operation. Prior to adjustment, this clutch had 5/8” of pedal free travel. To increase the free travel in the pedal and adjust the clutch, remove the cotter pin on the connecting rod, and then lengthen the rod in increments of one full turn by rotating it counter-clockwise to “unthread” the end connected to the clutch at the bell housing. In this case, 1 turn of the rod increased the pedal free travel from 5/8” to about 1”. A second turn would have created too much free travel. It’s important to have the free travel set within the specified range to make sure the clutch fully disengaged when the pedal is depressed, and is fully engaged and not slipping when the pedal is released. If not, the clutch will suffer premature wear and failure.
