Mica Powder Basics - Scenic Art

This video introduces mica powder, a shimmery mineral that is useful in making metallic, glittery effects. Most of the time, premixed metallic paint is great, but sometimes you need to be able to customize your metallic effects, which is why mica powder is so great. However, you do have to be careful with it, because it can be harmful. It is very bad to inhale, and dust masks likely will not be able to filter the small particles. When using mica in its powder form, be sure that you are in a fume hood or spray booth so that the particles will be sucked away, and I also recommend wearing a good respirator that has cartridges capable of filtering particles. It's better to be safe than sorry! The other important thing to note about mica powder is it is best to not put it down the drain. Mica powder is very harmful to aquatic life, and so you should dispose of it in the trash or other methods that doesn't reach the waterways.
