If you’ve struggled with grafting in the past, this video will definitely help you improve your success rate. Even beginners will be able to graft more confidently after watching this. Today’s topic is a variety switch: We’re going to graft the Florida mango variety ‘Irwin’ onto the Indian mango variety ‘Alphonso’. Let me first walk you through the flow of today’s video with a simple illustration. Part 1: Tree Overview. The tree we’re grafting is a mature tree. It has four strong main branches growing from the central trunk. Since the trunk itself is too thick to graft directly, we’ll graft onto each of the four main branches instead. These branches are the perfect thickness for grafting and make the process much easier. Part 2: Pruning the Main Branches. Let’s start by pruning the main branches. When you use electric pruning shears, the cut surface can be rough. So, we’ll use a handsaw to re-cut and smooth the surface. A clean cut surface significantly increases the chances of successful grafting. Part 3: Grafting Process. Now we begin grafting onto each of the main branches. When grafting multiple scions, make sure you align the grafting height. If one graft is higher than the others, that bud may grow more vigorously. Keeping all the grafts at the same height encourages uniform and balanced growth. You can expect the buds to sprout in about two weeks. Part 4: After Grafting. At the end of this video, I’ll also show you how the grafts grow over time — at 2 weeks, 3 weeks, and 6 weeks after grafting. Preparing the Scion. Choose scion wood with well-developed buds. Look for buds that are just beginning to swell. Always cut off the leaves with scissors — never remove them with your fingers. Tearing leaves by hand can damage the bud tissue and prevent new growth. Two healthy buds on the scion are enough. Avoid making the scion too long, as it increases the risk of it getting knocked or failing. After trimming the scion with scissors, shape the base cleanly using a grafting knife. Scissors often crush the tissue, so a knife is better for a clean surface. Shave both sides of the scion at around a 30° angle, and on one side, cut horizontally to fully expose the cambium layer. Preparing the Rootstock. Now let’s prepare the rootstock. Start by shaving the corner of the grafting site diagonally to bevel the edge. This helps expose the cambium layer and makes it easier to align with the scion. When cutting with the knife, apply it diagonally with a sliding motion — don’t push it straight in. Once you’ve made a clean cut, align the cambium layer of the scion and the rootstock. Important Tip: Alignment and Wrapping. Here’s an important point: Because the rootstock is thicker than the scion, align only one side of the cambium — align the right side. Then, wrap the grafting tape clockwise — this is crucial. Wrapping clockwise holds the scion in place. If you wrap counterclockwise, the tape can pull the scion away from alignment due to pressure. So remember: • If you align the right side, wrap clockwise. • If you align the left side, wrap counterclockwise. Finally, wrap a single layer of parafilm tape over the scion to prevent drying. Don’t wrap multiple layers — once the bud starts growing, it will break through the parafilm naturally. ==================================== ■HP https://okinawan-avocado.com ■kenyu's instagram / kenyu.uehara ■kenyu's X / kenyu0501_ ===================================== #grafting #grafting_mango #howtodografting #mangografting #mango
