The scion and rootstock are Lucuma and Canistel, which are also in the Sapotaceae family. Scion Preparation (The Most Important Step). For trees that are generally difficult to graft, this preparation step is essential.Here’s what you do: About 10 days before grafting, pinch off the tip of the branch you plan to use as your scion.This process is called “topping”, and it helps concentrate nutrients into the remaining buds, making them more active. When a branch is cut, the tree naturally tries to regain that height by activating nearby buds — and those energized buds make for ideal scions. When preparing the scion: Always use pruning shears to cut off leaves.Never tear them off by hand.Hand-tearing can cause unnecessary damage or even destroy hidden buds. Be sure to use sharp, clean tools — both shears and a grafting knife.Good tools are another essential key to grafting success. For cleft grafting: Trim one side of the scion flat. The other side should be cut at about a 15° angle.It’s a bit tricky to carve both sides into a perfect V-shape, so this method — with one straight and one angled cut — is a much easier and more beginner-friendly approach. Rootstock Preparation. Our rootstock today is Canistel, and here’s something to note:Canistel produces sticky sap when cut.If you graft right away while sap is still oozing, the success rate drops. So here’s what to do: Make your first cut and wait a few minutes.This allows the sap to flow out. Then, make a second cut slightly below the first one.This greatly reduces sap flow and creates a cleaner surface for grafting. To split the rootstock for cleft grafting: Use a sharp knife and gently tap it downward from the top. Since this rootstock is relatively thin, just lightly splitting it in half is enough. Once the rootstock is ready, insert the prepared scion.If the thickness of the scion and rootstock are about the same, their cambium layers will naturally align, so no need for precise adjustments. After inserting the scion, wrap it securely using parafilm grafting tape. How to Wrap Correctly. When wrapping, always start from the bottom and wrap upward.This allows dew or rainwater to run off the outside and prevents it from entering the graft union. Parafilm keeps the scion from drying out.Drying out is one of the biggest reasons grafts fail, so make sure: The surrounding humidity is high, and The scion is properly protected from drying. However, do not wrap multiple layers of parafilm.Just a single wrap is enough.This ensures that when the new bud starts to grow, it can easily push through the tape.
