[ TAKE THE PHYSIQUE QUIZ ] http://Quiz.SeanNal.com [ RECOMMENDED SUPPLEMENTS ] http://www.RealScienceAthletics.com [ CONNECT WITH ME ] / sean_nalewanyj / seannalewanyj ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bear Mode Vs. Lean & Aesthetic https://www.SeanNal.com/articles/trai... Which type of physique is better... "bear mode” or "lean and aesthetic"? (Bulky vs. lean) With the “bear mode” bodybuilding approach, the central goal is to maximize how big and muscular you look (especially in clothes) by maintaining a slightly higher body fat percentage in the 15-20% range and emphasizing certain muscle groups such as the delts, neck, traps and forearms to really give you that strong, powerful look. Contrary to what many people think, bear mode is not about "dirty bulking" or allowing yourself to become blatantly fat and unhealthy, and it also isn’t a specific muscle building method for maximizing your gains. Bear mode is really just about staying on the higher end of the healthy body fat spectrum (which could be anywhere between 10-20% for a male) to maintain a bigger, fuller look. Bear mode has certain advantages: you'll look more muscular in clothes, you'll be able to eat a larger amount of food and you’ll be physically stronger because you’ll be maintaining a higher body weight. However, you probably won’t look as impressive with your shirt off since you’ll have less visible muscle definition. In contrast, with the "lean and aesthetic" look, you’ll be staying at a lower body fat percentage (usually around 10-14%), which is going to make you look more impressive shirtless and when taking pictures, but smaller in clothes. You’ll also have to be more diligent in keeping calories controlled and you probably won’t be quite as strong, at least on certain big compound lifts. So, which is the better choice between bear mode vs. lean and aesthetic? There really isn't a single “best” answer in terms of which bodybuilding approach is optimal for the average natural trainee. As long as you’re staying within a healthy body fat range (10-20% for men), it’s completely up to you and what you think looks best. In the same way that some people prefer different hairstyles or clothing, a bulky vs. lean physique is just another question of personal preference. If you’re trying to decide between the different approaches, here are some practical points to consider... First, keep in mind that going bear mode and eating in a larger calorie surplus is not going to help you gain lean muscle faster since your body can only utilize a relatively small calorie surplus each day to build muscle, with the excess being stored as fat. So, once you do get up to that higher body fat level you'll want to make sure you dial your calories back (200-300 above maintenance is all that's needed to maximize muscle growth) to make sure your body fat levels don't climb up too high. Second, you should be living the same general lifestyle regardless of whether you choose bear mode vs. lean physique, which means a healthy diet based around minimally processed whole foods and including some cardio throughout the week. Bear mode is not an excuse to get fat and lazy. Third, if you’re still a beginner and don’t have a muscular foundation in place first and foremost, bear mode isn't going to be your best choice because you’ll probably just end up looking skinny fat. You’ll want at least a year of proper training under your belt and a decent foundation of lean mass first. Finally, if you’re going for that "Hollywood" aesthetic look, you probably shouldn't be trying to go much lower than about 10% body fat as a year-round condition. Going lower than this is where you'll start running into dieting side effects such as decreased energy, strength, libido and mood. At the end of the day though, if you’re following those guidelines and staying anywhere between 10-20% body fat, bear mode versus aesthetic mode is entirely a matter of personal preference and you should simply choose whichever one you think looks best on you.
