Born in Odessa in 1891, Pouishnoff was particularly celebrated for his performances of Chopin. He would make a number of recordings by that composer over the space of three decades, but his repertoire was broader than that (his modest discography includes some very fine Liszt and Rachmaninoff performances). The present reading was only the second complete account of a Schubert Piano Sonata released on record (Franz Josef's Hirt Polydor traversal of this same work seems to have been released just before this one) and was recorded at Wigmore Hall. Throughout the reading, Pouishnoff plays with a beautifully shaped melodic lines, sumptuous singing tone, and impeccably balanced chords, revealing with great skill the varying moods in Schubert's magnificent work.
