On 5th march 1963, five days after the writing of the song was complete, The Beatles entered EMI for a scheduled recording session lasting from 2:30-5:30pm to record both sides of their new single, this and Thank You Girl. This see’s both J160’s utilized again, John acoustically and George plugged in. The rhythm is pretty basic with John strumming through the chords, however, worth noting is a couple of different voicing’s of the C chord, the open one which is primarily used throughout the song and one at the third fret which is used in the bridges. From watching live performances you can see he does this so I replicated it here assuming he would’ve done the same in the studio. Although when playing live he plays the G7 as a barred variation at the end of each verse however I believe it was played like I have played it, in the 1st position. Be careful with the barred G7 in the verses, it isn’t a straight G7, it’s a G with the 7th added as an embellishment. For George’s part he uses the same octave style picking that is on ‘There’s a place’ & ‘Please Please Me’ etc, however for the solo he only plays it on single notes with the harmonica and bass also doubling it. It was performed as an overdub and there’s a debate surrounding which guitar he uses. Personally i think it’s the Duo Jet but used my J160 as I don’t own one.
