Facilitator: Mary Sciaraffa | Co-Facilitator: Mary Adams, EKU Instructional Designer Discover how we cultivated a Competency-Based Education (CBE) course with collaboration, curiosity, and Mr. Colonel. In this session, we’ll share our candid journey as a faculty member and an instructional designer who began with limited knowledge of CBE but co-created a successful course by embracing collaboration, iterative thinking, and the strategic use of AI tools. Together, we navigated fundamental questions: What does “competency” really mean in our context? How do national competencies align with course outcomes? What does student mastery look like—and how can it be demonstrated and assessed? With the help of each other and the right AI prompts, we moved from scattered ideas to a structured, student-friendly design. You’ll hear how we navigated uncertainty, leveraged technology, and ultimately built a more intentional, learner-centered experience. Join us for an honest, practical look at the “behind the scenes” of our design process—missteps, insights, and all—and leave with ideas and tools to support your own CBE journey. There may even be a cameo from Mr. Colonel. This session was presented as part of the Teaching and Learning Innovation series at Eastern Kentucky University on October 22, 2025.
