with the advantages that highways have brought us, there is also a significant drawback: they bypass the most beautiful landscapes of our country, largely depriving us of the stunning scenery it is filled with, along with the smaller towns, settlements, villages, and various locations in general where many treasures hide..that's why we decided to exit onto the alternative (old), much slower roads and paths, to enjoy the views and explore what might only be glimpsed while speeding on the highways.. 🔴 NOVIGRAD NA DOBRI: in the enchanting landscape of wooded and green hills above the river DOBRA, today lie the ruins of the once significant old town of NOVIGRAD..next to the town runs the old KAROLINA ROAD, continuing over the DOBRA river and a stone bridge built in the early 18th century, along with KAROLINA (1726-1730)..on the other side of the DOBRA river is the old CHURCH village (now NOVIGRAD) with the parish church of the ASSUMPTION OF MARY, an old school, and municipality, indicating the administrative importance of NOVIGRAD in times past..history has written many pages in this area from the MIDDLE AGES to the present, and the consequences are still felt..we do not know when the town received its present name, but it is known that it evolved through numerous additions over an extended period, from a defensive fortress to a magnificent castle..the area of NOVIGRAD is mentioned as early as the 13th century under the possession of DOBRA, and there likely existed an ancient CROATIAN PARISH of DOBRA.. 💡 FUN FACT: NOVIGRAD NA DOBRI was built in the 15th century as a defensive fortress against OTTOMAN invasions..interestingly, the castle sustained significant damage over the centuries, including during the NAPOLEONIC WARS..despite this, its owners continued to restore it, and the castle has managed to retain its GOTHIC and RENAISSANCE architecture, eventually becoming a symbol of resistance against invasions.. additionally, legend has it that there were secret underground tunnels beneath the castle, which were supposedly used for escape during attacks, though they have never been fully explored.. 🔴 BARILOVIĆ: the old town is situated on a rock, strategically positioned above the KORANA river..it has an irregular pentagonal ground plan with two cylindrical towers between which residential buildings are located, surrounded by defensive walls..built as a feudal town by the BARILOVIĆ family, it suffered destruction in 1524 by the TURKS..from the late 16th century until 1876, a frontier military garrison was stationed in the town..it was bombed and set on fire during WORLD WAR II.. 💡 FUN FACT: BARILOVIĆ CASTLE was built in the 16th century as a key fortress for defense against the OTTOMANS..what makes it particularly interesting is that the castle's walls were so thick that secret rooms and passages were hidden within them..these passages were used as hiding spots or escape routes in times of danger, allowing the defenders to regroup or flee unexpectedly..
