Stephen Jenkinson holds Master's Degrees in both Social Work and Theological Studies. He is a farmer, poet, musician, and former palliative care worker. A documentary of his work in the death trade was made by the National Film Board of Canada, called "Griefwalker." Stephen is also the author of several books on culture and on his time in the Death Trade including "Die Wise: A Manifesto for Sanity and Soul" and "Come of Age: Elderhood in a Time of Trouble." I sat down with Stephen to ask him about the future of social work. More broadly speaking, the future of counseling people through difficult times. Oftentimes, the question would come up as to whether or not certain treatments and methods were healing people or getting them back in for more therapy. What does it mean to be a faithful witness to the time you find yourself in? To whom are we as therapists beholden to? Who needs our help the most? What do we owe the land when we engage in "social work?" I asked Stephen a few questions, but I also did a lot of listening. I had the opportunity to stay with him on his farm in 2019 during an apprenticeship program and we have had this conversation together. There are some people you meet in this life that - given the brevity and unlikeliness of future encounters - compels one to be a witness to what will very likely never occur again. If you are talking, you cannot possibly hear what someone else has to say. This interview was, as Stephen talked extensively about in Die Wise, the "more time" I asked for.. and it wasn't lost on me. I'm grateful for our time together and my wish is that our conversation will nest itself in a similar location in your heart and soul. Thank you for your patronage, and for your time.
