Episode #11 of The Interested Interview with Kevin P Owens. Kevin P Owens grew up in Dundalk in County Louth. He joined the Irish Army in 1985. He signed up for the Irish Defence Forces and was recruited into the 27th infantry battalion. He grew up in a time in Ireland and particularly in the border counties during a tumultuous period of the Northern Ireland conflict. Owens points out that compared with the basic training of the United States, the Irish equivalent was tougher for him but he attributes this to being younger during the IDF basic training. The importance of structure, discipline and a sense of adventure were what drew the Louth man to the military. He was inspired by a Non-Commissioned Officer from the Ranger Wing attached to his section when on tour in Lebanon who according to Owens was ''the model of professionalism''. When he tried out for the Irish Army Ranger Wing Special Operations Force Qualification Course (SOFQ), he said it is vital that soldiers have the mindset of never giving up because you don't want a quitter in your section in difficult times. There was a ten year gap between Owens being in the Irish Army Ranger Wing and him trying out for the Green Berets. He joined the US infantry at 29 years of age in 1996 and then was 35 when he tried out for special forces selection. He had to wait six years and become a US citizen before he could try out for the American Special Forces. He explained the role of the Green Berets as a special force that specializes in Unconventional Warfare. His particular role was as a weapons sergeant. He spoke about SERE (Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape) school and how special forces' soldiers are trained how to react to capture and duress. Owens was then deployed to Afghanistan and then later to Iraq. He spent 18 years in the US Special Forces, ran the Special Forces Sniper Course and ran Force Modernization for Army Special Forces. Kevin Owens retired from Military service last year in 2020. Owens now works for Field Craft Survival, a company that trains and equips individuals to survive in the worst-case scenario.
