In todays episode i show you how to prune apple and pear and fig trees in winter. I also show you how to prune currant bushes and gooseberry bushes to give you healthy, pruned and well kept fruit bushes. By removing the centre it gives good airflow and avoids sawfly laying their eggs in the centre and being protected. This helps towards protecting your bushes from a sawfly attack later in the season. I also prune the grapevine and fig tree. The Grapevine Garden was cleared of winter damage and rubbish. All the paths had a good mulch dressing of bark , which was chipped from surrounding trees to the grounds. The no dig raised beds were weeded and are ready to be mulched with two year old , well rotted horse manure that has been composted down in my home made compost bins. The Autumn fruiting raspberry canes were cut down to 2inches from the base, awaiting new canes to emerge in spring for an early autumn harvest of raspberries. The Mini Polytunnel from First Tunnels was cleared of debris and inside the spare purple sprouting broccoli, the spring cabbages and oakleaf lettuces have survived the winter. They were added as a test, to see if I could use the tunnel through winter for tender crops. Success this year !!! Tony O'Neill at Simplify Gardening has confirmed Early march the first tunnels, polytunnel, will be recovered. Including new staging, new double door at the front and a single door at the back. It will also have crop bars added. Exciting times ahead!!! I can then build raised beds inside and prepare for my summer crops, such a tomatoes, aubo before any planting could be done. The owner is very lucky indeed :) I also felt a cold coming on, while filming. The day after filming, i tested and i had Covid Influenza. Plenty of rest and medicine followed...
