Rambling about realism in video games (playing Fistful of Frags)

I just felt like talking a little bit about how realism in games is a matter of degree rather than an all-or-nothing kind of deal, despite some people claiming that games are not supposed to be realistic at all. Every time I talk about how realistic certain weapons or fighting styles in a game are someone seems to get offended by the mere idea of daring to criticize anything. Even if it's a game with a historical setting that presents itself somewhat seriously. In my opinion it's perfectly fair to comment on things like realism and historical accuracy in certain types of games, and I think that these elements can potentially make the gameplay and/or presentation more enjoyable. Even though they are obviously not necessary.
