This ECHO session focuses on transitioning to a three-assay HIV testing strategy. World Health Organization guidelines recommend that all countries use a standard HIV testing strategy, which requires three consecutive reactive tests to provide an HIV positive diagnosis and to move away from using western blot and line immunoassays. As countries revise their national guidelines for HIV testing services and align to the standard HIV testing strategy, WHO encourages conducting a study to verify the national testing algorithms to ensure that the HIV products and diagnostics selected are appropriate and limit the risk of misdiagnosis. This is the first of two sessions focusing on this topic. In this first session, participants will learn: • The background evidence and rationale for using 3 tests to achieve correct diagnosis • The benefits of Consultant studies to optimise new algorithms • How to successfully include dual HIV/syphilis rapid diagnostic tests into algorithms • Strategies for making the transition and future planning Host: Francis Ocen, Project Officer, ASLM Presenters: • Cheryl Johnson – Technical Officer, HIV Testing Services, World Health Organization Evidence and rationale for using WHO HIV testing strategies and algorithms • Céline Lastrucci, Global HIV, Hepatitis and STI Programmes, World Health Organization Process to Update national HIV testing strategy and algorithms • Anita Sands, Technical Officer, Regulation and Prequalification Department, World Health Organization Forthcoming HIV testing services considerations and innovations to plan on for the future • Alaleh Abadpour International Consultant, HTS Algorithm and Verification Toolkit and Quality Assurance (country support), World Health Organization
