If You're Confused, Start Here! Kant vs. Utilitarianism (Kant's Ethics #1)

Kant’s ethical theory can seem confusing at first, with all its terminology—deontology, duty, good will, categorical imperatives, and more. But once we understand where Kant is coming from, we see he’s making an important point. In this video, we explore how Kant critiques utilitarianism and argues that morality isn’t about consequences but about acting from duty. One key issue with utilitarianism is that it judges actions solely by their outcomes. For example, if someone donates to charity purely for selfish reasons, utilitarianism says they’re just as moral as someone who donates out of genuine kindness—something that seems intuitively wrong. Kant, on the other hand, insists that morality depends on a good will, not just results. Another famous critique involves the idea that utilitarianism could justify killing an innocent person if it maximised happiness. Kant rejects this, arguing that moral actions must respect people as rational beings, regardless of the consequences. Kant’s deontological ethics focuses on duty, not consequences. He grounds morality in reason, insisting that we should act morally because it is our duty as rational beings. In the next video, we’ll explore this in more detail.
