Victorian sewer stone, to 21st century super sewer - From Thames to Eternity Project, reuse of stone granite blocks around City of London St Paul's Cathedral in London, art of the Victoria Embankment and the Tideway Super Sewer Project Sir Joseph Bazalgette - had a solution to create the Victoria Embankment, reclaiming over 22 acres of land from the River Thames for use as both a sewer and underground railway following the Big Stink. Now due to the Tideway Project, Embankment granite stone has been removed from next to Charing Cross Railway Bridge and Hungerford Bridge and reused for a display in the City of London. Granite blocks now on display: Sermon Lane, Carter Lane Gardens, by St Paul’s Cathedral, Christ Church, Grey Friars, King Edward Street, St Bartholomew’s Hospital and Smithfield Rotunda Garden. Reclamation and development of embankment can be seen on Ordnance Survey maps from 1851, 1869 and 1895. Tideway Super Sewer Project piers are now in place along the River Thames.
