Angraecum Crestwood ‘Tomorrow Star’ FCC/AOS: Currently blooming. AKA Christmas Star orchid. Fragrant only at night. 2. Angraecum Sesquipedale: Darwin's ochid. 3. Angraecum Eichlerianum: Climber. A long and thin species of Angraecum. Fragrant all day. 4. Angraecum Infundibulare: Climber. Also, a long and thin species of Angraecum. 5. Angraecum Leonis: Blooms twice a year. Doesn't grow as tall as Crestwood & Sesquipedale. 6. Angraecum Eburneum 7. Angaecum Distichium: Miniature. 8. Angraecum Lai's Star: New OBJECTIVE: Current size of Angaecum Crestwood, which is flowering, is about more than a foot tall. The leaves of Angraecum, which are quite long, are similar to the leaves of Dimorphorchis. The outer layer of some of the flowers of Crestwood are showing damage from the current cold spell. There are some dark spots forming on the body of Crestwood, possibly fungus, etc. This particular species seem prone to diseases when proper TLC is not given. Angraecum is a warm loving orchid. ASSESSMENT: Replaced the potting media with new porous materials for good aeration. Placed the plants in basket to hang in a well lit area. PLAN: Using cutip, soaked in hydrogen peroxide or bleach, gently remove the dark spots that are showing and forming on the body of the plant. CURIOSITY: Why did Charles Darwin pick to study this particular species? Born: Febuary 12, 1809; Died: April 19, 1882 (aged 73) England Charles Darwin believes in the theory of evolution/natural selection/survival of the fittest. Given informations show that this species produces interesting huge fragrant flowers, long spurs, long leathery-like leaves and other special features, who can resists to not be inquisitive. ANSWER: The mystery of the existence of an insect with long tongue capable of harvesting the nectar from the flowers located down to the buttom of each long spur and polinate the orchids is what enticed Darwin to pay close attention to the orchid named Angraecum sesquipedale. FYI Family: Orchidaceae Juss. Genus: Angraecum Bory Angraecum sesquipedale Thouars Orchidaceae is the largest family of flowering plants. There are around 220 species in the genus Angraecum, with new species being discovered recently in Madagascan forests. The genus name, Angraecum, is derived from the Malayan word anggrek, which is used to describe several species of epiphytic orchids. The specific epithet sesquipedale comes from the Latin sesquipedalis, meaning 'one and a half feet', in reference to the long flower spur.
