Here is a clip from our Mission harvest 2018. The Mission grape is the oldest vitis vinifera grape in the New World. It was brought to the Americas with the conquistadors and spread up to California (through what was then called New Spain) with the catholic missions, hence its name. Until very recently, the provenance of this grape was not known, but in 2009 Spanish genealogists concluded that the Mission grape is identical to the Listan Prieto grape in the Canary Islands. It's also identical to the Pais or Criolla Chica grape grown in South America, which makes sense, as they all came over to the New World at the same time. The Mission grape, our signature grape, was mistreated and neglected for over a century in CA. Today it’s a very rare grape, almost fully replaced by more fashionable varietals. But there would be no wine in California had it not paved the way for all the others, so we're eternally grateful we get to be part of its new dawn. Interest is coming back to this great varietal from wine lovers. We're obsessed with this grape and hopefully you’ll agree it makes a world class wine at our release early in 2020.
