2024 11 10 Sunday Service [What We Really See] 1 John 5:1-5 Hymn 314 1 John 5: Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well. This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands. In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God. (NIV) [What We Really See 우리 참으로 본] Many opticians believe that older individuals can perceive more shades of yellow and red. When it comes to watching a film, each person's visual experience can differ—from noticing the facial expressions of actors to the details crafted by stagehands. Some people may focus solely on the storyline and overlook other elements. Faith provides a vision distinct from that of unbelievers. 1) First, we perceive God's commandment to "love your God and love your neighbours," as stated in the Ten Commandments, through the lens of "I am in Jesus." To born-again Christians, the unseen Jesus becomes visible through spiritual insight (see verses 1 and 2). Moreover, we view God’s commandments as embodied in Jesus' sacrifice on the cross for our sake, making them not burdensome (refer to verse 3). What sets our perspective apart is the recognition of Jesus' victory and the declaration, "I am in Him." 2) While life's struggles—both psychological and physical—persist despite our efforts for positive change or financial support, faith offers a mighty solace. Even after we try to overcome certain issues, dormant troubles may re-emerge (as seen in verses 4 and 5). For victory, the true adversaries are Satan and our own shame for sins and faults. Our faith must actively fend off these foes by trusting in God. How does our faith work towards victory? It involves choosing to trust God unwaveringly, even in the face of defeat from sin, against which we alone are powerless. It is far better for us to risk everything trusting in God than to fall into sin, as relying on our own strength will ultimately lead to failure against Satan's power, which we cannot overcome on our own." In Mark 9:23-24, Jesus tells a father who has a son possessed by an evil spirit, “‘If you can?’ Everything is possible for one who believes.” The father responds, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief.” If you earnestly desire to believe that God helps you, this faith will indeed address your challenges. Prayer Almighty God, we earnestly ask you for such deeper fellowship of the Holy Spirit, who speaks in the blessed Scriptures, that when we open them, we may perceive his mind in what we read, and immediately hear in them his voice to ourselves. We ask you for a quicker understanding in spiritual things, for more desire to understand, a fuller perception of your promise in the church, that we may become teachable, and may love that by which you will teach us.
