Clenching and grinding of the teeth other than during these activities is not normal and it is called grinding or bruxism of teeth. Bruxism over a period of time can cause certain damages to the teeth and to the temporomandibular joints which is on which the lower jaw moves. The exact reason for bruxism cannot be pinpointed. But it is seen that grinding of the teeth may be caused by stress or by anxiety. Sometimes bruxism or grinding of the teeth is generally done by individuals during sleep wherein the person may not be aware of it. Bruxism is also seen more in patients with crooked teeth, abnormal bite and the patients with sometimes with sleep disorders like sleep apnea. Bruxism can cause damage to the teeth like attrition of the teeth causing sensitivity or pain or TMD or the temporomandibular joint pain, constant headaches or soreness in the temporal region when the person wakes up in the morning. Such patients should visit the dentist for correct diagnosis and further management. Very many patients who are bruxised will not know about it and will suffer with the symptoms. Often an alert dentist can pick up the signs inside the patient's mouth just during a routine examination and making the patient aware. The best treatment would be to find ways and means to stop the grinding of the teeth. Relaxation exercises, meditation, stress counseling, muscle relaxant may have some role to play. As well as sometimes fermentation with warm wet towel in front of your ears once in the morning once in the night before you go off to bed the use of alcohol, foods containing caffeine actually should be avoided. The most common treatment is to fabricate a night guard for the patient which will not stop the bruxism but will avoid damage to the teeth and to the temporomandibular joint. At Colnel’s Dental Spa we are skilled to identify a fair number of cases with bruxism and accordingly treat them with the best possible treatment modality which is specific to their needs.
