Date filmed: Thursday the 4th of April 2024 Video filmed at 13:40 Route: Newark to Lincoln Line Between Newark North Gate (NNG) / Newark Castle (NCT) and Collingham (CLM) Stations Crossing type: Automatic Half Barrier Crossing (AHBC) Filming location: Holme Lane, Winthorpe (NG24 2NU) A pair of 'Azumas' are seen in this video filmed at a level crossing on a very quiet road near the village of Winthorpe, just outside of Newark-on-Trent. Remarkably, despite having a barrier renewal in 2022, this crossing still has two loud, continuously-ringing mechanical bells retained at it! Even though they only sound until the barriers have lowered, they're a very effective way of warning all users of approaching trains. Nearby, a railway chord takes bi-mode Lincoln-bound trains off of the East Coast Main Line to join the other un-electrified regional line from Nottingham, and this is also the location of Newark's iconic flat crossing - the last remaining point in the UK where two full-spec main lines cross each other completely on the level. A LOT of interlocking and mitigation measures are in place there to do all that's possible to prevent a side-swipe.
