In the ongoing T20 World Cup, after days of drama about Pakistan’s team not wanting to play against India, there has been a new development. The final decision was left to Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) requested the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to reconsider its stand and allow the India–Pakistan match scheduled for 15 February 2026 to go ahead. On 8th February, PCB members and BCB Chief Aminul Islam Bulbul met an ICC delegation in Lahore to find a solution. The main focus was to ensure that the India–Pakistan match takes place as planned. During the meeting, the PCB placed several demands before the ICC. First, it asked that Bangladesh should not face any financial penalty for not playing in the T20 World Cup. The ICC replied that Bangladesh would receive its full revenue share and would not be penalised. Second, the PCB demanded that Bangladesh be given an additional ICC event in the next cycle. The ICC said that hosting an Under-19 World Cup is being considered. The PCB also requested ICC’s help in organising an India–Pakistan bilateral series and a tri-series involving India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. However, the ICC rejected both demands, stating that such series depend on the respective governments and are outside its control. The PCB further asked for ICC’s support in securing an India tour of Bangladesh in 2026, but this was also declined for the same reason. Reports say the PCB also sought a higher share in ICC revenue. It is believed that canceling an India–Pakistan match could cause huge losses in TV revenue, and the PCB may have used this as leverage. Another issue discussed was the handshake protocol, after India had refused to shake hands with Pakistan during last year’s Asia Cup, saying it was a goodwill gesture and not a rule. After the meeting, the ICC reportedly gave Pakistan 24 hours to take a final decision. Later, the Pakistan government posted on X that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was briefed by PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi. The government then directed the Pakistan team to play the scheduled match on 15 February 2026 in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. Now, everyone is waiting to see what happens next in this high-voltage tournament.
