The title of the video says it all. I spent July 4th weekend chasing the N&W J-Class 611 back and forth between Roanoke and Lynchburg on The Powhatan Arrow and Roanoke and Radford on The Pelican. Here is all the video I took from the weekend. The first scene is from the side of a small pasture in Webster, where we see the train head east on the first trip of the weekend at the Davis Road grade crossing. At the 1:22 mark, we see the train head back west through Webster at the vintage N&W gantry signals as it crosses Brickyard Road. Later that afternoon, at the 3:02 mark, we see the train heading back east from Radford at Diuguids Lane in Salem in a rain storm. It's the following day at the 4:32 mark. The first scene of the day is down in the middle of the Big Otter River near Lowry. I decided to hike in to this location and then waded in to the river to get this shot. I got a lot of bug bites and scratches from prickers, but I got a shot at an angle and location that nobody else got. This was the only video I got from this day. On the last day of the runs, we start in Blue Ridge at a private crossing on Major Wade Road at the 5:40 mark. The first of these scenes is just to get scenery noise, such as birds chirping, roosters crowing, and bugs humming around. The next scene at 6:08 gives us the first hints of the train's eventual approach, as we hear it blowing for a distant crossing. At the 7:50 mark, we finally get the action we've been waiting for; the train making a ton of noise as it climbs the grade up Blue Ridge. Just sit there and take it all in as the engine makes a great staccato from the stack as it works hard up grade. There's no whistle for the crossing, but that's just fine. It's better to hear the train work hard, anyway. We get a great plume show, too. At the 12:13 mark, we've made it to the wye in Lynchburg, where we see the train as it gets back under way toward Roanoke. At the 15:42 mark, I once again found myself all by myself at a great curve at a private crossing between Bedford and Thaxton as the train continued back west. The private crossing seen here is Bishops Way. At the 17:07 mark, we find ourselves back in Blue Ridge on the overhead bridge on Stepping Stone Road. Here, we see the train as it climbs the summit up Blue Ridge as it continues its journey back west to Roanoke. As the train duck under the bridge, I got "baptized" as they say, as I got hit with a hot blast of cinders and ashes. It burned for a quick moment and it made me cough, but it was a moment from the chase that I'll always remember. At the 20:57 mark, we hear the train as it blows for Davis Road in Webster, and then see it as it rounds the big curve just beyond the crossing. The last location where we see the train is at the 22:36 mark, as it blows for Switchback Road and then ducks under the old coaling tower at Vicker. Other locations were visited during the three day span, but only still photos were taken there. Enjoy the view of the whole train, as well as all of the great sounds and locations.
