Edward Elgar (1857–1934) "Nimrod" from the "Enigma Variations" Arranged by Vance Kreider Video Produced by Vagul Mahadevan and Vance Kreider Vance Kreider – Trumpet & Flugelhorn Justin Paul, Anais Beauvais, Spencer Miller, Zoe Winston, Rick Yoon – Trumpet Katie May Kretzer, Senna Keesing – F Horn Vagul Mahadevan, Benjamin Chang – Trombone Addison Greenfeld, James Mallek – Euphonium William McLaughlin – Tuba Elgar’s "Variations on an Original Theme" (1899), more commonly known as the "Enigma Variations" in light of the cryptic message supposedly hidden within them, marked the composer’s first major success with the public. A series of short character pieces, they each capture a facet of one of the composer’s friends: in this case, a time when his publisher August Jäger encouraged Elgar to respond to his emotional troubles by writing ever more beautiful music. Since Nimrod was a biblical hunter and “Jäger” means hunter in German, the title is a pun on Jäger’s name. Music has a unique ability to unite and heal us, even in the midst of the most troubling times. As a result of its majestic yet bittersweet character, Nimrod captures this ability as few pieces can. We hope that in the face of tragedy, you can find hope and inspiration in this piece just as numerous generations have before.
