In India only four species (C. circinalis, C. rumphii, C. beddomei C. pectinata) grow in wild whereas C. revoluta and C. siamensis are widely grown as ornamental plant in gardens. The plants are perennial, slow growing evergreen, palm like tree with an average height between 1.5 - 3 m. Its main plant body is sporophytic, diploid, dominant and can be differentiated into three parts – roots, stem and leaves. Root There are of two types normal and coralloid roots. Normal tap roots: It is long lived and grow deep into the soil and form tap root system. The function of these roots is to fix the plant in the soil and absorption of water and other minerals. Coralloid Roots: From the normal roots develop some small lateral apogeotropic branches near the ground surface. These roots grow horizontally, dichotomously branched and become swollen at their tips and forms knob like or coral like appearance and hence called as coralloid roots. The roots possess lenticles which help in respiration. Root cap and root hairs are absent in coralloid roots. These roots get infected with BGA (Anabena or other). The algae supply fixed nitrogen and the roots provides shelter and protection.
