Tana is the name of the river next to which the town is situated, and "bru" means bridge. The Germans burned the old bridge, as well as the town that was located a bit away, and the new one was built here. In 2020, the latest, third bridge was inaugurated—a cable-stayed bridge with a span of 234 meters. It is the bridge that serves as the town's main attraction and the reason for the town's existence. It has a strong presence, being close and clearly visible from the center, and it has been honored with an illuminated display in the evenings. In addition to admiring the bridge, in Tana Bru, one can shop for groceries, gasoline, and silver. The town is one of two central locations for legal matters in the Indre and Östre Finnmark District Court, covering the central and eastern parts of Finnmark with 11 municipalities. For a town with 600 inhabitants, Tana Bru boasts an impressively large police station and a courthouse. The court is supposed to be entirely bilingual, with Norwegian and Sámi considered equal in both speech and writing. Furthermore, the court is tasked with documenting Sámi customs and legal perceptions. Tana river is renowned for its excellent salmon fishing, and on the other side of the river the old bridge has been transformed into a fishing rod.
