Mark Fell. Against Method Music, sound installation and critical thinking Curated by Pedro Rocha Against Method, a project comprising a sound installation, concerts and a talk, is conceived by Mark Fell as a response to Sheela Gowda’s exhibition “Remains”, as part of the Public Program of Pirelli HangarBicocca. A multidisciplinary artist based in Rotherham (UK), Mark Fell’s practice draws upon electronic music subcultures, experimental film, contemporary philosophy and radical politics. Fell’s affinity with Indian classical music is rooted in the awareness that this is not guided by a linear score – its structure instead appearing almost like a process of folding and unfolding of elements. Over recent years, two research trips and several artistic projects in India allowed Fell a deeper understanding not only of the structure of Indian classical music but also about how it functions within a cultural context, namely in terms of issues relating to caste, gender and inclusion/exclusionary practices. Mark Fell Mark Fell is a multidisciplinary artist based in Rotherham (UK). His practice draws upon electronic music subcultures, experimental film, contemporary philosophy and radical politics. Over the past 30 years Fell’s output has grown into a significant body of work, from early electronic sound works and recorded pieces, to installation, critical texts, curatorial projects and choreographic performances. These address issues about time-perception, technology, and collaborative process. In 2017 Fell curated a major exhibition of sound art for VAC foundation (Moscow); he led a British council research project to India to study Carnatic music composition and emergent electronic arts; and Serralves Foundation (Porto) staged a major exhibition of his work with several new commissions. In 2018 he completed a commission “Protomusic#1” for Sage Gateshead, forming their flagship contribution to the Great Exhibition of the North. The diversity and importance of Fell’s practice is reflected in the range and scale of international institutions that have presented his work which include: Hong Kong National Film Archive, The Baltic (Gateshead), Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona, VAC Foundation (Venice/Moscow), La Casa Encendida (Madrid), The Institute of Contemporary Art (London), Royal Festival Hall (London), The Serpentine Galleries (London), The Australian Centre For Moving Image (Melbourne), Artists Space (NYC), Issue Project Room (NYC), Lampo/Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts (Chicago), Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie (Karlsruhe), Pirelli HangarBiccoca (Milan) and others. He has worked with a number of artists including Yasunao Tone, Keith Fullerton Whitman, Okkyung Lee, Laurie Spiegel, Luke Fowler, Peter Gidal, Terre Thaemlitz, John Chowning, Ernest Edmonds, Peter Rehberg, Oren Ambarchi, Carl Michael Von Hausswolff and Mat Steel (as SND). Drumming—Grupo de Percussão Founded in Oporto in 1999 under the direction of Miguel Bernat, the ensemble is dedicated to the evolution of erudite percussion in Western culture. With a primary focus on contemporary music, it also explores the drifting territories between jazz, rock and traditional music. The group has commissioned new pieces from composers who explore diverse and unusual forms, examining musical expression through percussion. Drumming—Grupo de Percussão has become a seminal force in Portuguese music, performing regularly at the Country’s main institutions, while gaining rising international notoriety.
