⁴ᴷ⁶⁰ Iconic Loud "Trumpet" Trains on the Genoa Metro - The AMT "Series 0"!

The Series 0 trains of the Genoa Metro are nearing the end of their careers. Built by Ansaldo in the 1980s, these were the very first trains to run on Genoa's metro system and have served since it opened in 1990. With new Hitachi-built trains entering service, the original fleet is now being retired, with only a few cars operating occasionally. What sets these trains apart is the unforgettable sound emitted by their propulsion system when accelerating and decelerating. The Series 0 trains use DC chopper propulsion control, producing one of the loudest and most distinctive acceleration sounds of any metro train in the world, almost like a loud trumpet! The DC chopper uses Pulse-Width Modulation to "chop" up the DC current at varying frequencies to vary the power output of the motor, resulting in the distinctive buzzing noise. The noise may remind many railfans of the famous Jeumont chopper-equipped trains from the Montreal Metro, which had a similar electronic tone during acceleration.
