Since the early 1990s, wind energy occupied only a small share of the global power mix, with countries like Denmark, Germany, and Spain serving as early pioneers in large-scale wind installations. After 2005, Europe—led by Germany and Spain—saw significant expansion, while the United States also began increasing its wind capacity at a steady rate. By around 2010, China surpassed both the U.S. and Germany to become the world’s largest builder of wind power. From 2010 to 2025, China’s development has been remarkable, adding vast amounts of onshore and increasingly offshore capacity, placing it far ahead of other nations. The United States remains the second-largest market, continuing strong annual additions, while India has steadily climbed the rankings to secure a leading position as well. Many countries across Europe, Latin America, and Asia have expanded rapidly, but still lag far behind in total installed capacity. By 2025, the top wind-energy producers are China, the United States, and Germany or India—depending on the metric— with China alone responsible for a large share of recent global growth. Falling turbine costs, supportive policies, and major technological improvements have driven this transformation. sources: Data: Energy Institute Editor: capcut Thumbnail: Canva Wind Energy countries: Canada Mexico United States Argentina Brazil Chile Colombia Ecuador Peru Trinidad & Tobago Venezuela Austria Belgium Bulgaria Croatia Cyprus Czech Republic Denmark Estonia Finland France Germany Greece Hungary Iceland Ireland Italy Latvia Lithuania Luxembourg Netherlands North Macedonia Norway Poland Portugal Romania Slovakia Slovenia Spain Sweden Switzerland Turkiye Ukraine United Kingdom Azerbaijan Belarus Kazakhstan Russian Federation Turkmenistan USSR Uzbekistan Iran Iraq Israel Kuwait Oman Qatar Saudi Arabia United Arab Emirates Algeria Egypt Morocco South Africa Australia Bangladesh China Hong Kong India Indonesia Japan Malaysia New Zealand Pakistan Philippines Singapore South Korea Sri Lanka Taiwan Thailand Vietnam
