Health and Safety Talk (Working at Height)

Work at height is work where there is a risk of a fall liable to cause personal injury unless precautions are taken. Work at height results in more fatalities than any other work activity. The main risk associated with work at height are falls and falling objects. These are created by hazards such as; fragile roof sloping roof deteriorating materials unprotected edges unstable access equipment adverse weather conditions. Falling from height can result in; 1. death 2. neck or spinal injury leading to permanent paralysis 3. brain damage 4. multiple broken bones. Common cause of fall at height unsecured ladders incorrect angle placed on even surface used in rain or strong wind over-reaching or leaning sideways climbing with tools in the hand Faulty or damaged scaffolding missing guardrails weak planks improper assembly no toe boards over loaded platforms Improper use of harness or lanyards no edge protection slips and trips weather conditions Fall protection Hierachy 1. eliminate working at height (if elimination is not possible then) 2. Use collective fall prevention guardrails barriers scaffolding 3. Fall restrain system 4. Fall arrest system harness and lanyard system that stops a fall 5. Administrative control signage permits supervision 6. PPE the last line of defence.
