During Atrial Diastole: R & L Atria relax so they can fill with blood. While they are filling with blood, the Tricuspid & mitral Valves close to prevent blood from leaking into the ventricles. Additionally, during this phase is when the R & L ventricles are contracting and the pulmonic and aortic valve are opening. 2. During Atrial Systole: R & L Atria are contracting and ejecting blood into the ventricles. The Tricuspid and mitral valves open to allow blood to flow into the ventricles. Additionally, during this phase the right and left ventricles are relaxing, which means the pulmonic and aortic valves are closed to prevent blood from leaking into the pulmonary artery and the aorta. 3. During Ventricular Systole: R & L Ventricles contract and the pulmonic and aortic valves open. This allows the ventricles to pump blood into the pulmonary artery and the aorta.
