In this video, I dive into whether choosing the busiest Camino route, the Camino Frances, is the right option for first-time pilgrims. The Camino Frances is undoubtedly the most popular pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela, attracting large crowds, especially during peak months like May and September. I've walked this iconic route three times, and while it's amazing, its popularity means you’ll face packed paths and potentially limited accommodation options, especially in the final 100 kilometers from Sarria. So, should you avoid the Camino Frances entirely? Not necessarily! I suggest walking during less busy shoulder periods like early spring or late autumn, when the route tends to be quieter and accommodations are more available. It’s important to consider what kind of Camino experience you're looking for. If you're seeking solitude and reflection, a quieter route or off-peak period might suit you better. However, if you love meeting lots of people and enjoy a lively, social atmosphere, the Frances can be a perfect choice. Another key recommendation I share is to have a flexible plan. Consider booking your initial accommodations up to Pamplona in advance, as this tends to be one of the busiest sections. After that, keep your options open. If you find the Camino Frances too crowded, having a backup plan like switching to the Camino del Norte, Camino Portugues, or other less busy paths can be a real comfort. My ultimate advice for first-timers considering the Camino Frances? Give it a go, but keep a Plan B handy. The Camino Frances has a special, vibrant energy and historical significance that's worth experiencing at least once. And for seasoned pilgrims who’ve already experienced the Frances multiple times, it might be worth exploring other beautiful routes to help reduce congestion and allow first-time pilgrims the opportunity to fully enjoy this iconic trail. Enjoy the Camino, whichever path you choose, and Buen Camino!
