Deep within the branches of Yggdrasil, the World Tree of Norse mythology, runs a small but legendary creature — Ratatoskr, the messenger squirrel. According to the ancient sagas and the Poetic Edda, Ratatoskr carries messages between the mighty eagle at the top of Yggdrasil and the dragon Nidhogg, who gnaws at the roots below. But his whispers are not peaceful… they fuel rivalry, anger, and endless conflict. This song tells the legend of Ratatoskr, the mysterious runner of the World Tree. Inspired by ancient Viking storytelling, skaldic poetry, and Nordic myth, the music evokes the atmosphere of longhouses, ritual drums, and the echoes of sagas told beside the fire. In the mythology of the North, even the smallest creature can move the fate of gods. Let the whispers of Yggdrasil travel through the roots and branches once again. Lyrics Yggdrasil rises in the center of the worlds Roots in the well where the Norns decree fate High in the branches an eagle watches Nine realms turning beneath its gaze Deep in the darkness under the roots Nidhogg gnaws with venom and rage Teeth on the bark of the ancient tree Warring against the passing age But on the trunk a shadow moves Faster than wind through northern snow Ratatoskr runs the World Tree high and low Bearer of whispers the gods all know From the eagle’s crown to the dragon below Carrying sparks that set hate aglow Ratatoskr laughing through bark and storm Words like arrows in secret form Up through the branches down through the roots Chaos awakens wherever he shoots “Listen, dragon,” the small voice says “The eagle mocks your crawling might He laughs at the bite of your weary teeth And calls your fury hollow tonight.” Then up he runs to the crown of leaves Where the eagle rides the endless sky “Great lord above,” the runner speaks “Nidhogg curses your wings on high.” Back and forth the whispers fly Like winter winds through ancient wood Ratatoskr runs the World Tree high and low Bearer of whispers the gods all know From the eagle’s crown to the dragon below Carrying sparks that set hate aglow Ratatoskr laughing through bark and storm Words like arrows in secret form Up through the branches down through the roots Chaos awakens wherever he shoots The eagle screams to the northern wind The dragon tears at the ancient roots Thunder rolls through the world-tree limbs While the little runner salutes For wars are born not only by steel Nor always by the clash of shields Sometimes a whisper in cunning ears Is the sharpest blade the world can wield Ratatoskr runs the World Tree high and low Messenger swift where the cold winds blow From heaven’s height to the depths below Sowing the storms that rage and grow Ratatoskr laughing through bark and storm Fate in motion with every word As long as Yggdrasil stands in the worlds The echo of whispers will still be heard.
