ENGLISH LYRICS In the gap where silence shattered Fire and frost became the storm Muspel’s flame and Niflheim’s whisper Forged the first and formless form From the rime a giant rising Shadow crowned in frozen flame Ymir born of ancient chaos None before and none the same From the flesh of Ymir we rise From his blood the seas were born From his bones the mountains tower From his skull the sky was torn World of wonder, world of fear Shaped by gods who struck him down All we are is built on Ymir Chaos wears creation’s crown Audhumla in silence wandered Licked the salt from ancient stone From the ice came bright Búri First of gods to claim a throne Borr’s three sons with burning purpose Odin, Vili, Vé the bold Turned the tide of primal fury Spilled the giant’s crimson cold Blood like rivers red and roaring Skull became the vaulted dome Clouds from brains in heaven drifting Earth from flesh became our home From the flesh of Ymir we rise From the void the world was cast In his death the dawn awakened Future rising from the past OLD NORSE LYRICS Í gapinu djúpa dimmu eldr ok íss mættusk þar Muspells logi, Niflheims þoka mynduðu form í myrkri svar Af hrími reis risi mikill Ymir jötunn einn ok kaldur fæddr af kaosi fornu frumr ok feigðar valdur Af holdi Ymis heimr varð af blóði hans rann sær af beinum björg risu há af hausi himinn skær Úr dauða reis ný röð regin felldu risa stór úr óreiðu varð alda úr Ymi fæddist jörð Auðhumla sleik saltan stein Búri steig úr ísi fram fyrstr ása fagr ok sterkr forlög tóku nýjan ham Synir Bors þrír ok djarfir Óðinn Vili Vé felldu Ymi flæddi blóð fylti djúpan sæ Blóð sem elfr rauðr ok breiðr heilinn varð at skýjum hold varð jörð ok hús mannkyns himinn reistur nýjum Af holdi Ymis heimr varð af gapinu kom ljós í dauða hans kviknaði dagr dró úr myrkri rós The Story of Ymir (Norse Mythology Summary) According to the Prose Edda and the Poetic Edda, Ymir was the first being to emerge from Ginnungagap, the primordial void between the fiery realm of Muspelheim and the icy world of Niflheim. When heat met frost, melting ice formed the giant Ymir — the ancestor of all frost giants (jötnar). From his body new giants were born. Meanwhile, the primeval cow Audhumla nourished him and revealed Búri, the first of the gods, by licking salty ice blocks. Búri’s grandson Odin, along with his brothers Vili and Vé, slew Ymir. His blood flooded and drowned most of the giants. The gods then shaped the cosmos from his remains: His flesh became the earth. His blood became the seas. His bones became the mountains. His teeth became rocks. His skull became the sky. His brain became the clouds. Thus, the ordered world emerged from the body of chaos.
