This spring's Dean’s Lecture Series on Race and Discrimination concluded with "Implicit Bias, Structural Bias, and Implications for Law and Policy," a lecture by Associate Justice Goodwin H. Liu. In almost every organizational setting, today’s leaders are grappling with challenging issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion. “Implicit bias” and “structural bias” have become familiar terms in everyday discussions about diversity, but the terms are not always well-defined. Drawing on recent work convened by the National Academy of Sciences, Justice Liu will discuss the evidentiary basis for implicit bias and structural bias, as well as possible legal responses and mitigation strategies applicable to a variety of institutions and organizations. Goodwin Liu is an Associate Justice of the California Supreme Court. Nominated by Governor Jerry Brown, Justice Liu was sworn into office in 2011 and retained by the electorate in 2014. Before joining the state’s highest court, Justice Liu was Professor of Law and Associate Dean at the UC Berkeley School of Law. His primary areas of expertise are constitutional law, education law and policy, and diversity in the legal profession.
