Bunia townspeople running to take cover STORYLINE: The Lendu ethnic militia group attacked Bunia, a town in the north eastern Democratic Republic of Congo on Saturday in a bid to gain a foothold in the area before an international force deploys to stabilize the region. Hundreds of Lendu fighters using assault rifles, heavy machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades launched dawn raids on positions held by the Union of Congolese Patriots, or UPC, an ethnic Hema faction that currently controls Bunia. A day earlier, an advance party of French troops arrived in the area to prepare the ground for the arrival of a thousand strong force intended to stabilize the region where thousands of people have been killed. Fighting began 6 kilometres south of Bunia, the capital of unstable Ituri province, before moving to the centre of town, forcing hundreds of frightened residents to flee their homes. A UN official, who did not want to be identified, said at least 2,000 Lendu fighters had moved into town, some of them child soldiers younger than 10. Hundreds of residents fled to the compound of the UN mission to Congo, or MONUC, as bullets whizzed overhead. The Rwandan-backed Hema and Ugandan-backed Lendu fighting escalated after a power vacuum was created when some 6,000 Ugandan troops pulled out of Ituri region in accordance with a peace deal with the Congolese government. Both Rwanda and Uganda polarised long running ethnic tensions between the two groups who for decades have clashed over land disputes. The presence of gold and other resources has also fuelled the fighting. There are some 750 MONUC troops from Uruguay deployed in Bunia whose mandate is to protect UN installations and personnel but not the local civilian population. They can only fire in self defence and have only been able to observe as the killing continues.
