The Cincinnati & Hamilton County Public Library documents the stories of Cincinnati's vibrant running and cross country running community, including the founders and organizers of Cincinnati's Flying Pig Marathon. Reggie McAfee ran at Cincinnati's Courter Tech High School, Brevard Junior College, and at the University of North Carolina. He set two All-Ohio records in the 1969 State High School Track Meet and also won two state high school cross country meet individual titles. In college, he won two national junior college track events and one national junior college cross country meet. While in school at University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, Reggie was a four time All-American. On the international level, Reggie was the Bronze Medalist in the 1973 World University Games, held in Moscow. He was also the co-captain for the US team. Reggie's best known accomplishment is that in 1973, he became the first African American to run a sub 4:00 minute mile (3:57.8 fastest).
