Au Revoir Tristesse was commissioned by Axis Ballymun to whom I am eternally grateful. I Une soie, énervante et douce (A silken web, languid and soft) In composing these five bagatelles, I took as my inspiration five phrases from Françoise Sagan’s Bonjour Tristesse. People have described Sagan’s writing as, “la petite musique,” - the little music. This first phrase is to be found in the very first paragraph of the novel and is such a beautiful, evocative and musical way to describe the sensation which she describes as a sweetness, a web of silk which separates you from others - sadness.
