As a student in our 16-month ABSN program, you’ll attend nursing skills and simulation labs at our ABSN Learning Center several times a week to practice the application of nursing theory in a safe, contextual learning environment. Replicating an advanced hospital setting, our nursing skills and simulation labs have you and members of your cohort intervene in a variety of clinical scenarios across the patient lifespan. But instead of tending to real people, you’re able to hone your skills by way of clinical task trainers and full-body simulation manikins. Nursing Skills Lab Within this lab setting, you’ll learn how to perform core nursing skills, such as taking patient vital signs, performing head-to-toe assessments, administering intramuscular injections, dressing puncture wounds, and providing tracheostomy care. And what’s nice about skills lab is that it’s a highly supportive environment where it’s OK to make and learn from your mistakes. “I was able to take the skills I learned during labs and apply them in the real world,” said Greg, Xavier ABSN student, class of December 2018. Nursing Simulation Lab Taking your nursing competency to the next level, this lab setting gets you as close as possible to real-life patient care situations. During these labs, we challenge you to think and act like a nurse by having you integrate theory with practice while making clinical decisions in real time. “You go into simulation not knowing anything about the patient because that’s what happens in nursing,” said Lauren, Xavier ABSN student, class of May 2018. “You’re given a brief rundown of the situation, and then expected to go in and do the best you can. Overall, simulation lab is a safe place. Because you’re not graded, it’s strictly about building your confidence, acknowledging your errors, and growing your skills.
