Insulation condition is one of the major factors that dictates the length of the life of a transformer. Hence, monitoring the insulation is essential to having a successful maintenance program for transformers. Power factor testing has been used as an insulation condition assessment tool for transformers for over 100 years now. While it has been a reliable test for a long time, some advances have been made in the field of power factor testing in recent years. Power factor testing at multiple frequencies has been explored and it has been found that useful information is obtained from the way power factor changes with the signal frequency. With technological advancements in measurement capabilities, factory and field operators are now allowed to estimate the moisture concentration in the solid insulation and the contamination of the liquid insulation by means of non-invasive and non-destructive methods. This is the fundamental application of Dielectric Frequency Response (DFR) for power and distribution transformers with paper-oil insulation. DFR is a leading technology of practical application in the field. It is widely used to prioritize maintenance and service activities as well as to define the specific type of treatment needed to improve the condition of the insulation inside the transformer. Please join us for this Virtual Best Practices Seminar to gain a better understanding of power factor and dielectric frequency response testing and its applications.
