R2 0815 In 2024, Japan experienced an unprecedented series of four shocking internal fraud incidents at financial institutions. Among them, the most striking case involved Japan’s largest bank, where cash and gold bars worth a total of 400 million New Taiwan dollars were embezzled from safety deposit boxes. The cause of this incident lay in the exploitation of a simple blind spot in the robust security system that the bank had carefully built over the years. This presentation will explain the remaining vulnerabilities in the financial system and countermeasures against internal fraud. It will also provide a tutorial-style explanation of the root causes of internal fraud, as well as a discussion of how today’s advanced office environments may inadvertently increase the risk of such incidents.
