A brief analysis of diversity in British policing presented by Dr. Rizwan Mustafa. His presentation is based on his own subjective experiences of policing over 10 years, further supported by research and data. He argues that the current presentation of Diversity, Equality & Inclusion in the police service is little more than virtue signaling. Much more focused effort is required by strategic leaders to challenge discriminatory practices, unseat toxic culture(s), and embed wholesome, sustainable change for race & faith communities. To his knowledge, Dr. Rizwan Mustafa was the first qualified Islamic cleric (Imam) in his force. Dr Rizwan Mustafa is the Director and Head of Research at Khal Marina. He is also a Senior Lecturer in Policing at the Staffordshire University and specialist consultant to the Countering Violent Extremism Unit in the Commonwealth. Rizwan has worked in the British Police Service, with INGO's, the Foreign & Commonwealth Office and other public sector organisations. He is trained in classical Islam; completing the darse nizami from a traditional seminary in Pakistan and is invited to speak at international Counter Terrorism conferences. Rizwan also advises governments on their national Counter Terrorism Strategies. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
