Hi, everyone. Bruce here at etrailer. Today we're gonna take a look at and install the Tekonsha Trailer Wiring Kit on our 2024 Volvo XC40. You may be wondering why if you're just hauling a bike rack with your trailer hitch, why you would need fore-pole wiring Well, you could use the four-pole wiring if your bike rack actually has lighting on the back of it or if you've got a cargo carrier that has lighting on the back. But the main reason we all know, that this wiring is for hauling a small utility trailer. Now what this wiring does, it gives you the signals on the back of your trailer or if, like I mentioned before, if you've got a bike rack with lights on it or a cargo carrier. It's gonna send those signals back to those taillights and turn signals so everybody can tell which direction you're going or if you're stopping. Now, if you are getting a receiver hitch put on your vehicle, I do recommend that you go ahead and do the wiring along with it. It's just gonna open up more options for you. If you wanna go with a small utility trailer to haul a lawnmower or something like that. It's perfect for that. Now, there are some optional brackets that you could get for our four-pole connector to actually sit down by the receiver. Our neighbor opted not to go that route, and I kinda like not going that route because then your plug's not hanging out in the weather all the time. So, let's go ahead and take a look how this works. So, this cable is just gonna run inside, underneath our little storage here. And I can lift that up and we can just lay it in there, and it's gonna keep it nice and out of the weather or getting any damage hit from anything or stepped on, or what have you. As far as the installation goes of our wiring kit, it is actually quite simple. You just gotta get access to your spare tire and pop out a couple access panels where the taillights are and plug them in, and you're good to go. Now if you don't wanna do that or you just don't have the time to do it, check out our dealer locator on etrailer.com. But if you do wanna give it a shot, stick around. I'll show you how. To begin our installation, we do need to get to where the spare tire is in our vehicle, so we do have to remove all the coverings inside. And we're just gonna pull these out and set them aside. Now, take our cover that's actually covering the spare tire and we're just gonna pull up on it and pull it straight back, and go ahead and set that aside. Now, we're gonna take an eight millimeter and we've got a couple of bolts that are holding our threshold in. We're gonna go ahead and remove those. (tool whirs) The next step of removing the threshold, we do need to get these metal inserts out. There are a couple of bolts underneath there. We're gonna use a plastic trim tool to do that. Slide it in. I'm just gonna kind of pry on it as we go down. (metal inserts clinks) And go ahead and set that aside. And we've got one bolt here, which is a eight millimeter and one bolt on the other side that's an eight millimeter. Now, we do need to gain access to our plugs that are going into the taillights. And we've got a little compartment here and you're just gonna squeeze down on the top of it and pull it out and set that aside. And we do have one on the passenger's side as well. If we come in a little closer, you can see where our plug is right in here. I just wanna go ahead and show how you actually disconnect these plugs. It does just have a tab on it right here that we're gonna push down with our thumb. And then you'll push that down and then go ahead and pull it out. The other side will work exactly the same way. Taking our yellow and brown set of wires, I ran down through the bottom here and back up to our access point here. And what we're gonna do here is from our taillight that we unplugged, this is factory wiring. It's just gonna plug into our wiring harness just like that. And our other end is gonna go ahead and plug into our taillight. Now, we're gonna take our module box here and we are going to go ahead and screw it down right here. And then, we will take our red and our green, which will go to our passenger's side of the vehicle. And we'll go ahead and route that and hook that up the same way we did our driver's side.
