Pre & Post Operation Care - the step before it all begins! We believe in the power of educating our patients as early as possible, which is why our education team meets new patients in the hospital before, or directly after, their amputations. We are the first contact patients and their families have with the world of prosthetics, so our goal is to make the transition as easy and worry-free as we can. As early educators, our team explains each step of the post-amputation process so our patients are prepared for the road ahead. It’s our honor to attend post-op appointments and check in regularly with our patients while they heal to give hope and support when it is needed most. Step 1: Initial Evaluation When you’re ready to start the process of getting fit for your prosthesis, the first step is the Initial Evaluation. Because we are beginning a life-long relationship together, we really take the time at this appointment to get to know your story and what is important to you—all of the goals, interests, and hobbies we know you want to get back to doing with independence and freedom. At this appointment, you get to see the facility where your prosthesis will be built, meet our staff, and learn about the components and materials that will make your prosthesis unique to you. Our practitioners will work closely with you and your family throughout the process, conducting assessments and explaining how and why each decision is made with you in mind. Your prosthesis should empower you, not limit you. By investing quality time at the beginning of the process we can ensure you are able to live with confidence when you leave our facilities with a prosthesis in hand! Step 2: Casting At your second appointment, our practitioner will take a plaster mold of your limb. This is called the Casting Appointment! By capturing a replica of your limb and taking detailed measurements, our practitioners are able to begin molding what will become your test socket, and eventually, your final prosthesis. All providers have the same technology available to them, but all outcomes are not the same: getting an accurate plaster mold of your limb is key to ensure your prosthesis fits you correctly. We hand-cast all of our patients to ensure we capture the nuances of how your limb is uniquely shaped to ensure the best outcome for each of our patients! Steps 3 & 4: Test Socket and Dynamic Alignment A week after your casting has been completed, you get to try out your test socket. Your feedback is critical at this appointment since you are the expert of your own body: you can tell us what feels right, and what does not. Based on your feedback, your practitioner will made any modifications necessary to your test socket in preparation for your final device! After you and your practitioner are satisfied with how the test socket fits, your practitioner will duplicate the socket into a new mold. Your new socket will be made of carbon fiber so it’s structurally sound, and attached to the other components you chose during your Initial Evaluation—knees, ankles, feet, etc! At this point, you get to try it out for the first time! If you are a lower-extremity amputee, you will take your first steps between the parallel bars in our facility so your practitioner can observe your gait and make any final adjustments needed. We’ll have you bring your own shoes to try, and encourage you and your family to capture the moment and celebrate you! Step 5: Delivery Day—AKA the best day! Delivery day is the culmination of all your hard work and patience finally paying off—the day you get to take your new prosthesis home! You get to do one last test run to make sure no further adjustments are needed, and then your practitioner will show you the ins and outs of using your new prosthesis in your daily life. They will give you step by steps on how to put it on (don), how to take it off (doff), and how to use all the supplies you’ll need to care for your new limb. You’ll even get a wearing-schedule to help you break your new device in. Delivery day is full of lots of hugs, tears, laughs, and cheers: it’s our highest joy to get to share such an amazing day with you. Before you leave with your new device, we’ll make sure we’ve got a follow up appt scheduled to check on how the device is working in those early stages, and we are here for the long-haul whenever you need us!
