How to Grow From A Trunk Slammer Episode 116 I still smile when I hear the phrase “trunk slammer.” That’s not a jab. It’s a snapshot of where so many of us start. I began with everything I needed in the back of a car. I’d pull up to a job, open the trunk, clean, pack up, slam the trunk, and roll to the next site. Maybe that’s you right now. Maybe it’s you and one other person—your spouse, a best friend, a family member. That’s a great place to start. It’s just not where you want to stay. Personal and Business Growth Growth begins with deciding you’re building a real company. Early on, I got a tax ID so I could collect sales tax and opened a separate business bank account. While there are a lot of things I can tell you to do when starting your business, one of the first is keeping clean books. Don’t mix money. I know it’s tempting to take the easy route. DON’T! Easy Growth is Tempting for trunk Slammers I know. I’ve been there. You’re facing more costs than you expected and when the cash offers come, you’re tempted otherwise just pocket the money. Customers will ask you, “What if I pay you in cash?” Rather than think about what you receive now, think about what you want. That practice won’t help you build a quarter-million-dollar business (let alone a million-dollar one). None of those businesses are founded on cash jobs. It’s hard to track, hard to insure, and hard to scale. Moving from Trunk Slammer to Business Owner When you’re ready to make this a career, you have to formalize. Entity structure matters. DBA, LLC, S-Corp all have their strengths and weaknesses. Talk to an attorney and get the right protection in place. If you’re operating in New York State, I have an excellent business attorney. Insurance matters too. General liability, workers’ comp. There are so many things to protect yourself from. Speak with a knowledgeable agent. Again, if you’re in New York State, I have another terrific connection for these insurances. Your future clients will ask for certificates and expiration dates. The higher you climb, the more compliance becomes part of the sale. Working Space for Former Trunk Slammers I started in an apartment, then a rented half-house. Eventually, I bartered cleaning for a 100-square-foot office. That tiny space doubled my business in a year because it forced me to be focused and professional. No more distractions. I showed up like a company, not a hobby. From there, I upgraded into larger space through relationships and referrals, added vehicles, and invested in more equipment and chemicals. Today, our office is about 3,000 square feet. This includes the need for storage for products and consumables. We have room for equipment, and a training room for our growing team. When we moved in, it felt huge. Now, it feels full. That’s what steady growth does. Is that what you want? Evolving from Trunk Slammer Along the way, the expectations of your clients evolve. In the beginning, you might clean a two-room office or a chiropractor’s suite. Later, larger clients will ask for documentation. You’ll need to provide insurance renewals, time-and-materials backup, proof of labor hours. That’s where systems turn into sales. Use a payroll provider with geofencing so you can verify time on-site. Standardize your invoicing, track job costing, and make it easy to answer audit-style questions. The more professionally you operate, the more professional your clients become. I started this company with $117. No lie, I seeded my company by selling Mary Kay cosmetics. That allowed me to purchase a used vacuum that was seven years old when I bought it. It was a good piece of equipment and it’s still my emergency backup 13 years later. Seven-Figures from a Former Trunk Slammer We’ve grown into a seven-figure operation. That happened because we did the unsexy things consistently: Kept clean books Made compliance a must Maintained proper insurance Run out business from a real space Use real systems Are relentless about follow-up. If you’re a trunk slammer today, good! Own it! Then outgrow it with intentionality. Many of your fellow trunk-slammers are working just as hard as you. And most of them will remain tiny and busting their humps for little or no return. They’ll pay their bills but have nothing to show when they stop working. YOU don’t have to have that result. YOU can choose a smarter, better path. It will cost you two things: #1 Leisure Time #2 Acceptance that you don’t know everything If you own a cleaning company and you’re ready to professionalize, scale reliably, and avoid the common scars, I’d love to coach you. Reach out, and let’s build the systems, structure, and confidence that take you from the trunk to the boardroom. https://docsfs.com/contact/
