Constance Markievicz: the first woman elected to the House of Commons

Constance Markievicz was the first woman to be elected to the British Parliament. She was elected for St Patrick's, Dublin in the General Election of 1918. However, as a member of Sinn Fein she did not take her seat in Parliament, refusing to take the oath of allegiance to the king. “I would never take an oath of allegiance to the power I meant to overthrow.” Markievicz played an active role in the Easter rising of 1916, for which she was sentenced to death! She was instrumental in myriad Irish political movements and causes and remained a staunch republican throughout her life.
